Scripture: James 4:7 – Submit
yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from
you. When you choose to submit – the devil has no choice but to flee from
your life and circumstances!
The word submit or being submissive
seems to have more negative rather than a positive connotations associated to
it. When we hear that word; many of us automatically become defensive
with the idea of having to be submissive to something or someone because of the
actual definition of the word. By definition; to submit means
to: to obey, put under, be subject to, submit oneself unto, put in subjection
under or be under obedience or obedient to. Although, that is the
definition; we have to understand both the content and the context in which the
word submission or submit means from a biblical perspective and toward God.
As Christian women growing in our
faith there are certain things we have to understand. Jill and I have
narrowed these things to three specific questions in particularly as it relates
to submitting your life totally to God and allowing God to use you (your gifts,
ability, talent, vision) to fulfill the mission of the kingdom.
Questions we will answer:
#1 What does it really mean to
“submit to God”?
#2 What does submitting to God look
like?
#3 What does submitting to God feel
like?
There are so many lies that are
often told about what living a Godly life looks like. We are here to
dispel the lies and reveal that submitting to God
is not a boring, old-fashion, “Churchy” life, but a time of liberation, a time
of joy, a time of peace, a time of fun and a time of loving who you are just as
God created you; fearfully and wonderful made in His own Image.
What does it really mean to submit
to God? In order to submit to God we have
to be able and willing to also submit to the authority of those that have rule
over us. That means our supervisors, the law; a husband if married,
elders, pastors etc. That is submission from all aspects in which we will
cover in those terms/context at a later time. For these purposes, we will
focus on submission to God.
#1 First and foremost; you must be
born again This is accepting in your heart that
Jesus is the son of God and that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Then
asking God through His son Jesus Christ to come into your heart. This is giving
your life to God through confession of your sins, repentance and then daily
obedience to God’s word. Begin “born again” aka “saved” is not a behavior
modification program but rather a mind and heart transformation. Romans 12:2
tells us to not be conform to the things of the world (activities, behaviors,
practices etc) but to be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
#2 You have to transform your
mindset in order to willingly submit to God.
God will often use situations in our lives to present us with the opportunity
to submit to Him and submitting to God allows us to learn and grow spiritually.
#3 We have to spend time with God
through reading the word, praying, studying, and meditating daily. You have to build and strengthen your relationship
with God daily so that you can trust Him enough to want to submit under His authority.
Be submissive is a process that begins from the moment we commit our lives to
God but there is work to do on our end to ensure we hold up our end of the
bargain. When we submit to God; we are saying to God that we are
accountable to Him.
Submitting to God look like is you
letting go of your will and allowing the Lord’s will to be done.
This is you moving from the driver’s seat to the passage side of your life and
letting God take charge. You
are still in charge and responsible for your spiritual growth in the areas of
being faithful in your Christian walk. This is being faithful in and over
your ministry. This is being faithful and diligent over things or people
that God has blessed you with (i.e. husband, children, job, finances, your
TEMPLE etc). Being submissive isn’t so much about bowing down on our
knees every chance we get but more so it is about our day to day life in
Christ. Submission to God is simply obeying His word – that is what it
looks like!! Being a willing servant/child of the most high God operating in
our full capacity as little Christ to fulfill the mission of the KINGDOM.
Our lives behaviors/actions should emulate Christ! But it takes us
being #1 Proactive in our walk with God/faith #2 Choosing to Submit – With
a willing and Humble heart and #3 Being Consistently Constant (or
intentional) about the things of God!
Submitting to God feel like unspeakable joy, happiness beyond what the world can offer
you. It is like breathing a breath of fresh air over and over again without
any toxic blocking your air passage. It is a feeling of contentment in
knowing that you are in the will of God and that you are accountable to someone
beyond yourself. It is a feeling of assurance and reassurance that you are
God’s gift; you were hand selected to carry out the plans of God. You
know undoubtedly that you are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image and
likeness of God It is a feeling of Victory, rebirth and fabulous all at the
same time! Whom the son (Jesus the Chris) has set Free is free indeed (John
